Des started kayaking in his teens, and enjoyed the freedom and adventure of the sport.

Growing up in Wiltshire he would spend many evenings and weekends paddling on a local river exploring and developing his skills. He completed the Devizes to Westminster race as a junior, and plans to go back as a senior one day. Going out in the surf introduced him to controlling a kayak in a dynamic environment and the inevitable capsizes proved a good foundation for whitewater kayaking, where he enjoys the challenge of running and playing on the rapids. This led back to the sea where he discovered rapids could be found on tide races around the coast and an interest in the power of the tide led to becoming a regular surfer on the Severn Bore.

Having gained a great deal from kayaking Des is keen to introduce others to the sport, he has led expeditions, coached technical skills and taught new instructors.

Abi started her journey in to water sports at a young age when camping at reservoirs around the South West with her family, in particular Stithians and Siblyback.

Abi learnt how to Windsurf, Kayak and Sail taking part in clubs every weekend. Growing up, outdoor pursuits became a big part of her life and she took part in Ten Tors and found a love of exploring mountains in Wales and Scotland. In 2010, Abi joined an instructor training programme where she started gaining NGB qualifications to share her love of the outdoors with others.

Since then Abi is now qualified in leading white water kayaking, sea kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, mountain biking and mountaineering with experience in many other activities. She has young twin girls who are also enjoying taking part in the adventures.

James loves coaching both land and water based activities, taking people out on adventures and enjoying nature.

A keen paddler, he is at home in anything that floats – sometimes even boats with holes in them! Out on the water he can usually be found with a big smile on his face.

James enjoys going on sea kayaking expeditions to new locations but has come to the conclusion that the South West is best!

Having worked in the outdoors since 2004 I’ve now happily settled here in Devon.

Working in this industry and within education allows me to showcase and challenge students and clients in all the environments the South West has to offer. I’ve recently been putting a lot of time and energy into planning and leading sea kayaking expeditions and will be taking a group up to the Isle of Skye later this year.

In my own free time I explore some of the lesser known surfing locations in the area, with varied success!
